If you are starting a new job during this time, you potentially face an interesting challenge: beginning a new role from your own home. As companies embrace virtual working, it looks like the new way of working remotely is here to stay.
Starting in a new company is both exciting and nervy but now you potentially have the added complication of doing it remotely. It is a new way of working and presents possibly a new approach and point of view when you start.
See some of our insights to help you settle into your new job as a remote worker, and you’ll find you won’t be long establishing yourself in your new role. Best of luck!
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP
In a normal working environment, questions come naturally and experience is gained faster. Don’t be afraid to raise a virtual hand and speak up. Asking questions is the only way you are going to familiarise yourself with the company and its day-to-day activities.
If it hasn’t been thought of already by your superior, asking for a virtual mentor for the first week can prove very effective. Think of them like an online welcome buddy, there to assist you via phone or email and help with a smoother transition.
OPTIMUM WORK ETHIC
Being on top of your game will really prove yourself to your new employer, give you confidence in your new role and provide you with that extra bit of oomph you need to settle in.
It may be logging in online 20 minutes earlier than your team to get organised, reaching out to other employees to see if you can be of assistance, or just sending regular update emails to your boss. Whatever it is, your efforts will be noticed and you will find your stride in your new job in no time.
SET UP YOUR AREA
It might sound obvious, but never underestimate the power of a decent work station. Designate an entire room if you can (i.e. a spare bedroom) and transform that area as if it were your real office space.
Don’t be afraid to indulge in some luxuries if you think they will help you settle into a new routine better. A good desk chair is a must, and why not consider investing in a small coffee machine designated for working hours?
ESTABLISH A SCHEDULE
Working remotely tends to mean more flexibility, which can be dangerous no matter your work ethic. That's why it's important to set a strict structure to your day, especially when you're first starting out.
If surrounded by family life, make sure other family members know your schedule so they try not to disturb you during working hours. If you have young children, they will also need to get used to the new working routine. It is important for you to feel confident your day is structured how you feel fit, knowing you can balance your working routine and your family routine. Working from home can bring the added pressure of feeling you need to be on your laptop more than required … it is just sitting there, right? Establishing an efficient routine will help you switch off and focus your attention on your family and/or yourself.
CREATE WORK CONNECTIONS
While working remotely may be a novelty at the beginning, it can wear off and leave employees feeling isolated. Setting up good habits in the beginning goes a long way in creating a healthy virtual working environment.
Staying in contact with other employees is vital. Find out their preferred method of communication, whether it’s video chatting, phone calls or even WhatsApp messaging. Whichever channel it is, getting onboard will help hugely in the settling in period and last well into your working career.
FINAL THOUGHTS
We should remember that remote working will likely be a fact of life for some time to come, so it's worth putting in the effort to establish your own personal set of best practices from the start.
This is also a strange time for all employees. Even your new co-workers who have been at the company for a long time may need support from time to time, so it's important to be understanding and empathetic towards your fellow workers.
